The first thing I will say is if A.J. Green and Dez Bryant are available at 12 and 13 I will take the two of them every time. Each had huge seasons last year, and should be shoe-ins for at least 80 catches, 1200 yards, and 8 touchdowns. At the time of my first and second picks the best running backs available were Stevan Ridley, Matt Forte, and Steven Jackson; all who I have below the two receivers. The only running back I may have budged on would have been Steven Jackson.
With the third and fourth picks I wanted to take two running backs, but instead went with Vincent Jackson, and Demarco Murray. I’m particularly high on Jackson, but may have been better off drafting Reggie Bush, Darren Sproles, or even Chris Ivory to pair with Murray. Interestingly, people seem to still be down on Larry Fitzgerald considering he went only three picks before my third selection; if Fitz was there he would have been the pick instead of Jackson.
Murray is pretty decent value in the fourth round, however per usual he has proven to be an injury concern.
With my fifth and sixth round picks I was going to grab another running back to pair with Murray, but Ryan Mathews, Vick Ballard, and Lamar Miller were taken just a few picks before; I was targeting them. So, I decided to pass on reaching for a running back and go with Aaron Hernandez and Matthew Stafford. By all accounts Hernandez could be the number one tight end this year. Even if Gronkowski manages to be healthy by the start of the season, Hernandez is still going to have a huge year. Then I took Stafford who at the time was the best quarterback available, and should improve upon his letdown 2012 season.
In the seventh I finally grabbed my second running back in Jonathan Stewart. It seems Deangelo Williams has had one foot in the grave for the past couple years, but he just keeps moving along taking touches away from Stewart. While Stewart was hurt last year hopefully the Panthers decide to finally decide on Stewart being the lead back permanently
For my bench I wanted to take a few running backs to help me sleeper better at night, but that wasn’t possible. What I’m seeing is running back really isn’t that deep this year, sure there are a few high upside guys, but only about 10-20 sure things, and they go quick. Even some of the backs in the 15-20 range have question marks. Regardless, I was fine taking Zac Stacy, Daryl Richardson, and Denard Robinson; all guys who I consider to have considerable upsides.
Lastly, if there were three receivers I would want in the mid to late rounds they would be Danario Alexander, Denarius Moore, and Kendall Wright. In all honesty in my next mock draft I will try to draft so that two out of those three would have to be my starting receivers.
As usual defense, and kicker are just throwaway picks for me.
Overall if this draft was for one of my main leagues I would have been pretty happy with it, with the exception of my suspect running backs.
